Event Details:
  • Date: Saturday, March 23, 2024
  • Time: 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
  • Location: Penrith School of Arts, 3 - 7 Castlereagh Road, Penrith
  • Facilitators: Dr. Sarah Powell, Senior Lecturer in Creative Arts at Macquarie University, and Mr. Rob Sequeira, Vocal Coach and Music Director of Vox Canvas, Sydney’s premier a cappella chorus.
This inaugural session, covering a range of topics that set the stage for the subsequent sessions, promises to be enriching and beneficial for all, regardless of gender, age, or singing experience.

Key Topics Include:
  • Individual and social well-being
  • Physical health and well-being
  • Mental health, happiness, and emotional well-being
  • Relaxation, energy, and positive emotions
  • Opportunity for expression and intellectual challenge
  • The accessibility of singing as a form of music making
  • Satisfaction of making music and developing musical skills
  • Building friendships and positive relationships through collective expression
  • Elements of great singing: posture, breath, phonation, and support
Practical Highlights:
  • Learn to sing the iconic "What a Wonderful World" a song made famous by Louis Armstrong
  • Harmonising techniques and connecting with the song's message for an authentic performance
Subsequent Sessions: Additional sessions on March 25 and April 8, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, at The John Lees Centre, 15 Evan Street, Penrith, will deepen the insights gained in the first session. These sessions will be facilitated by Peter Fragar, Music Director of Penrith Harmony Chorus.

Preparation: Experienced singers are requested to learn a part of their choice in the attached sheet music for "What a Wonderful World." Harmony learning tracks are also attached to facilitate learning. Feel free to choose a part that comfortably suits your vocal range. If you have a high vocal range, consider choosing either the Lead or Tenor part. Hint: the Lead part is the melody line, the part that most people recognize when they know the song.

Invite Others: Share the joy! Invite colleagues or friends who might benefit. Note that learning the song prior to the event is not necessary for inexperienced singers – it's entirely optional.
